OAS Course on International Law marks 40th anniversary


The fortieth edition of the Course on International Law opened in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on August 5th , bringing together the Chairman of the Inter-American Juridical Committee (CJI), Ambassador João Clemente Baena Soares, and other members of that body. Also in attendance was the Director of the OAS Department of International Law, Dr. Dante Negro, along with other guests.

XL Course on International Law

This ceremony focused on the significant role the Course on International Law has played in training more than 1,500 lawyers and international experts in the Hemisphere, whom it has benefited for 40 unbroken years.

At the opening ceremony, welcome was extended to the thirty-two students selected for the course this year, among them OAS fellowship awardees and other students from various countries of the region. A stirring tribute was also paid to Ambassador Luis Marchand Stens, a Peruvian jurist who died recently.

The course will run for three weeks. During the program, participants will take specialized classes in various subject areas, with developments in law and international relations. A select group of lecturers from various countries of the region and Europe will conduct the classes.

The Course on International Law is a prestigious, internationally renowned academic activity organized annually by the Inter-American Juridical Committee and the OAS Secretariat for Legal Affairs' Department of International Law. This activity is part of the Inter-American Program for the Development of International Law, adopted by the OAS General Assembly to promote and disseminate information about international law and the inter-American agenda .
