Course on International Humanitarian Law


On Thursday, June 24, 2021, the OAS Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs (CAJP) will hold the “Seventh Course on International Humanitarian Law (IHL)”.

The General Assembly resolution AG/RES. 2959 (L-O/20), "Promotion of and respect for international humanitarian law,” instructed the General Secretariat, through the Department of International Law and in coordination with the ICRC, organize within the framework of the CAJP a course for member states, staff of the Organization, and the general public, in order to promote knowledge of and respect for international humanitarian law and related regional instruments, including measures for their effective implementation. This course on international humanitarian law (IHL) will last 3 hours (2:30pm to 5:30pm) and will cover topics of great importance for diplomats, other professionals and those interested in this legal area.

The course will include an introduction to international humanitarian law with an emphasis on the protection of persons during an armed conflict and the specific topic to be developed will be on gender-based sexual violence from the approach of international humanitarian law. (See

The course lecturers are from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and will be the Legal Advisor and Head of the Authorities Program - Regional Delegation for Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador (See Bio), the ICRC Regional Legal Advisor for the Americas (See Bio), and the Coordinator of Operations related to Sexual Violence - Delegation for Colombia (See Bio).
