The 48th Course on International Law organized by the
Inter-American Juridical Committee (CJI) and the Department of International Law
of the Secretariat for Legal Affairs of the Organization of American States
(OAS), concluded successfully in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on
August 11th.
The closing ceremony was held at the Escola da Magistratura do Estado do Rio de
Janeiro (EMERJ) and was co-sponsored by that institution. During the ceremony,
Dr. Jean-Michel Arrighi, Secretary for Legal Affairs of the OAS, Ambassador
Néstor Méndez, Assistant Secretary General of the OAS, Dr. José Antonio Moreno
Rodríguez, President of the Inter-American Juridical Committee, and Dr. Gabriela
da Silva Rafael Carneiro, Secretary General of the EMERJ on behalf of Judge Des.
Marco Aurélio Bezerra de Melo, Director General of the EMERJ, and ended with a
posthumous tribute to Ambassador João Clemente Baena Soares, former Secretary
General of the Organization of American States, and former Chair of the
Inter-American Juridical Committee.
Throughout the two-week course, 38 participants from 13 countries from the
Americas learned about various topics in the field of public and private
international law, as well as new legal developments in the Inter-American
system. The faculty included officials from international organizations,
academics, judges, arbitrators, and internationalists. The students also had the
opportunity to visit the facilities of the Inter-American Juridical Committee
and have a dialogue with its members.
