OAS Member States Commit to Advancing Geotourism in the Americas
At the recently held XXI Inter-American Travel Congress, ministers
and senior officials responsible for tourism adopted the
Declaration of San Pedro Sula on Geotourism in the Americas,
effectively advancing and deepening the sustainable tourism approach
of the two most recent ministerial meetings. At the meeting, held
September 5-6 in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, countries committed to
work together to support and energize the tourism sector, one of the
most significant drivers of economic activity in the region.

In search of an informed and participatory Society for Sustainable
Development
"It is the right and responsibility of all citizens to participate
in decisions relating to their own development" reads Article 6 of
the
Inter-American Democratic Charter. Based on the principles of
the Democratic Charter, the Ministry of Environment and Energy of
Costa Rica and the OAS-SEDI Department of Sustainable Development conducted the National Workshop on
"Strengthening Mechanisms for Participation and Access to
Information for Sustainable Development" on September 12, 2013
in San Jose. Participants in the workshop included representatives
from government, civil society, social actors and other entities
concerned with the promotion of sustainable development.

An Inside Look at the OAS Scholarship Selection Process
Educators from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Jamaica, Panama, and the
United States met in Washington in September to review hundreds of
scholarship applications for the
OAS
Academic Scholarship Program. Applications from all OAS Member
States were reviewed, evaluated and ranked by these experts that
comprise the Academic and Technical Studies Scholarship Selection
Committee (ATSSSC). The committed group of experts on the Committee
volunteer their time, expertise and experience each year. They help
to ensure that the selection process is held to the highest
standards of professionalism and is conducted in a fair and
transparent manner.

Cooperation in Action
Renewed
OAS/CIP - PIANC Agreement seeks to develop efficient hemispheric
port systems. The OAS-SEDI, through the Inter-American
Committee on Ports (CIP), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
with the US Section World Association for Waterborne Transport
Infrastructure (“PIANC”) that seeks to strengthen the sector through
mutual collaboration, technical cooperation, training, events
cooperation, and exchange of expertise and information. The MoU
renews an earlier agreement signed by both parties on December 7,
2005.
