OAS at the intersection of social inclusion and environmental justice
"Natural resources are not only the heritage of a country from the perspective of its natural beauty; natural resources are also a source of job security and opportunities," said Minister of Justice of Paraguay, Sheila Abed, in the High-Level dialogue entitled “Good governance and environmental justice: Towards an inclusive development agenda for the Americas" organized by OAS-SEDI’s Department of Sustainable Development (DSD) in the framework of the OAS General Assembly and held in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice of Paraguay; the United Nations Environment Program, and the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law.  

During the event, OAS Assistant Secretary General, Albert Ramdin, called on participating authorities to work towards transforming the region’s aspirations into specific actions for attaining social inclusion and environmental justice. In this regard, Justice Antonio Herman Benjamin of Brazil’s National High Court (STJ) that “there can be no environmental protection without an effective judiciary.”  

Participants included Ministers from the region and representatives from partner organizations and experts. The event’s two sessions produced important contributions for Member States to consider in preparation for the Third Inter-American Meeting of Ministers and High-Level Authorities on Sustainable Development to take place in 2015 and will feed into the process of defining a post-2015 development agenda, with sustainable development at its center. "
