Driving Small Businesses Development in Jamaica

With the launch of its pilot Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) on January 23, 2015, the government of Jamaica marked a milestone in its support to the local small and medium enterprises sector. The launch signified a culmination of the efforts of a broader OAS initiative in the CARICOM region that began in 2012, designed to strengthen the capacity of the institutions that support, assist and train Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by adapting the United States SBDC model. The support of the MSME sector is a key component of a comprehensive economic strategy to foster inclusive and sustainable development. The sector has traditionally faced obstacles that have hindered its performance, such as limited access to finance, difficulties in the internationalization of markets, and low levels of competitiveness. As such, in recognition of these challenges, Member States have taken steps at both the national and regional levels to strengthen this sector. » Read more

As the region’s governments look to grow the competitiveness of their productive sectors, there is an increasing need to establish and promote public policies and programs that encourage research, development and marketing of technology-based goods and services. ITEN concludes cooperation missions between 16 Member States. The Inter-American Teacher Education Network (ITEN) is working on compiling detailed information about the lessons learned and achievements of the 12 technical cooperation missions carried out during 2014 with the participation of over 250 representatives from the Ministries of Education and teachers from 16 OAS member states. » Read more

The OAS-SEDI team reaches out to its local Washington community during the holidays.  The OAS-SEDI team held a food-drive in December in coordination with the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB), providing 160 pounds of food (enough to feed 10 families) and cash donations for local families struggling with hunger – estimated at nearly 700,000 individuals in the area. » Read more
