Sustainable Development and Bio-Cultural Conservation in the Brazil-Suriname Border Region

The project aims to promote conservation and enhancement of the physical and cultural environment (forests, rivers, and heritage), the sustainable development (primarily of non-timber forest products), the education (primarily ethno-education), capacity building, and (where appropriate) the healthcare and security of the indigenous communities in the Brazil-Suriname Border Region.

The Project Components are:

Component 1: Development of the legislative basis and the institutional framework for the land rights of the indigenous peoples and Maroons of Suriname.
Component 2: Promotion and integration of traditional medicine, and improvement of health care in the Trio and Wayana communities of Suriname.
Component 3: Improve cross-border and in-country communication through direct channels to meet conservation and development challenges.
Component 4: Design and implementation of monitoring and protection plans in indigenous areas.
Component 5: Conservation-oriented incomes for local inhabitants established.
Component 6:Capacity building of indigenous and other local partners to better protect the forests and to help them attract other funding in the medium and long-term.
Component 7: Updated maps of protected areas and indigenous communities.
Component 8: Local institutions/community groups trained in specific skills for land management and land-use monitoring.
Component 9: An increased level of participation of the indigenous population in regional/national conservation strategies.
Component 10: Indigenous peoples and relevant agencies, trained in the protection of the forest from threats originating outside the reserve.
Component 11: Assessment of potential for renewable energy use in the indigenous areas, including challenges, barriers and proposals, and support for implementation of renewable energy systems.
Component 12: Proposal for submission to GEF to develop a strategy and activities for the conservation of biodiversity in the region prepared.
