Component 9

An increased level of participation of the indigenous population in regional/national conservation strategies.

The Project aims to promote integration of indigenous populations into national and regional discussions surrounding conservation and development issues. In-depth consultation processes with government agencies were developed during the “First Transboundary Meeting on Environmental Protection for the Brazil-Suriname Border Region”, held in Kwamalasamutu from June 3-4, 2006 and in Paramaribo from June 6-7, 2006.  Brazilian representatives from state and federal agencies and indigenous representatives participated in the aforementioned Transboundary Meeting.   Representatives of the Tumucumaque-area indigenous organizations APITIKATXI and APITU participated in this conference.

In Brazil, a cooperative agreement has been signed with IBAMA to work collaboratively on the better management and protection of Amapá’s protected areas.  This specifically includes the training of IBAMA personnel on how to work with remote indigenous communities, on indigenous legislation and laws as well as introduction to key indigenous leaders and indigenous park guards.

In Brazil, representatives from ACT-Brazil, IBAMA, and other government agencies organized the 2nd Annual Conference on Protected Areas in Amapá .  The conference was held from November 16-17, 2005, and counted participants from 12 different state and non-governmental organizations.  The objective of this conference was to promote improved communications between government agencies and civil society partners with respect to the management of Amapá’s protected areas.  During the meeting, future priorities were established, and a work group was developed for the evaluation of the situation and presentation of solutions to securing state protected areas. A Third Annual Conference on Protected Areas in Amapá, with the same objectives, was held in Macapá from November 16-17, 2006.
