Component 6
Capacity building of
indigenous and other local partners to better protect
the forests and to help them attract other funding in
the medium and long-term
In
order to fulfill conservation objectives while ensuring
the indigenous populations are immediate beneficiaries
of the nature reserves established in their territories,
the Project supports the training of Trio and Wayana as
park guards, and supports their training in
administration and financial matters related to the
management of natural reservations. Thus, in Brazil, in
September 2005, Project personnel held the first-ever
complete Indigenous Park Guard course, recognized by the
International Park Guard Federation. The course enjoyed
the collaboration of IBAMA, the natural resource
institute of Brazil, among other institutions. In
Suriname, workshops focused on funds management,
administration and community participation were planned
for the Trio and Wayana communities, have been conducted
under the continuous guidance of the local community
foundations established as implementing units for the
traditional leadership in the indigenous communities of
Kwamalasamutu, Tepu and Apetina (
and
).
In Brazil, ongoing project activities together with the
Associação dos Povos Indígenas do Tumucumaque (APITU)
and other indigenous associations of the region include
informal instruction in and support with accounting
issues.
