PEACE QUOTES
|
“...peace must not be an ideal, but a reality. It
cannot be one possible choice to a solution, but the
only choice to a solution.”
–José Miguel Insulza
OAS Secretary General
“Peace is a never-ending process, the work of many
decisions by many people in many countries. It is an
attitude, a way of life, a way of solving problems and
resolving conflicts. It cannot be forced on the smallest
nation or enforced by the largest. It cannot ignore our
differences or overlook our common interests. It
requires us to work and live together.”
–Oscar Arias
Nobel Peace Laureate and former President of Costa Rica
“Peace is not the product of terror or fear.
Peace is not the silence of cemeteries.
Peace is not the silent result of violent repression.
Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the
good of all.
Peace is dynamism.
Peace is generosity.
It is right and it is duty.”
–Oscar Romero
Archbishop of San Salvador
“But peace does not rest in the charters and covenants alone. It lies in the hearts and minds of all people. So let us not
rest all our hopes on parchment and on paper, let us strive to build peace, a desire for peace, a willingness to work for
peace in the hearts and minds of all of our people. I believe that we can. I believe the problems of human destiny are
not beyond the reach of human beings.”
–John F. Kennedy (1917-1963)
Thirty-fifth President of the United States
“We believe that health transcends
political divisions. We believe that
not only can it, but many times it has
been a key factor in promoting
dialogue, in fomenting solidarity and
in contributing to peace among
people and among nations.”
–Sir George Alleyne
United Nations
Secretary-General's Special Envoy for HIV/
AIDS in the Caribbean region
“A human being has the right to live
with dignity, equality and security.
There cannot be security without real
peace, and peace must be built on the
firm foundation of human rights.”
–Sérgio Vieira de Mello
A Brazilian
United Nations Senior Official
“My wish is that a conscious sense of peace and a feeling
of human solidarity would develop in all the people,
which could open new relationships of respect and
equality for the next millennium, ruled by fraternity and
not by cruel conflicts.”
–Rigoberta Menchu
Nobel Peace Laureate

Fair Antigua and Barbuda,
We thy sons and daughters stand,
Strong and firm in peace or danger
To safeguard our Native Land.
We commit ourselves to building
A true Nation brave and free;
Ever striving, ever seeking, Dwell in love and unity.
Raise the standard! Raise it boldly! Answer now to duty's call To
the service of thy country, Sparing nothing, giving all; Gird your
loins and join the battle 'Gainst fear, hate and poverty, Each
endeavouring, all achieving, Live in peace where man is free.
God of nations, let Thy blessings Fall upon this land of ours; Rain
and sunshine ever sending, Fill her fields with crops and
flowers; We her children do implore thee, Give us strength, faith,
loyalty, Never failing, all enduring To defend her liberty.

Lift up your head to the rising sun, Bahamaland;
March on to glory, your bright banners waving high.
See how the world marks the manner of your bearing!
Pledge to excel through love and unity.
Pressing onward, march together to a common loftier goal;
Steady sunward, though the weather hide the wide and
treach'rous shoal.
Lift up your head to the rising sun, Bahamaland;
'Til the road you've trod
Lead unto your God,
March on, Bahamaland!

BARBADOS

National Anthem of Barbados
When this fair land was young,
Our brave forefathers sowed the seed
From which our pride is sprung,
A pride that makes no wanton boast
Of what it has withstood,
That binds our hearts from coast to coast‐
The pride of nationhood.
CHORUS
We loyal sons and daughters all
Do hereby make it known
These fields and hills beyond recall
Are now our very own.
We write our names on history's page
With expectations great,
Strict guardians of our heritage,
Firm craftsmen of our fate.
The Lord has been the people's guide
For past three hundred years.
With him still on the people's side
We have no doubts or fears.
Upward and onward we shall go,
Inspired, exulting, free,
And greater will our nation grow
In strength and unity.

National Anthem of Belize
LAND OF THE FREE
O, Land of the Free by the Carib Sea,
Our manhood we pledge to thy liberty!
No tyrants here linger, despots must flee
This tranquil haven of democracy.
The blood of our sires, which hallows the sod,
Brought freedom from slavery oppression's rod,
By the might of truth and the grace of God.
No longer shall we be hewers of wood.
CHORUS
Arise! ye sons of the Baymen's clan,
Put on your armours, clear the land!
Drive back the tyrants, let despots flee‐
Land of the Free by the Carib Sea!
Nature has blessed thee with wealth untold,
O'er mountains and valleys where prairies roll;
Our fathers, the Baymen, valiant and bold
Drove back the invader, this heritage bold
From proud Rio Hondo to old Sarstoon,
Through coral isle, over blue lagoon;
Keep watch with the angels, the stars and moon;
For freedom comes to‐morrow's noon.

PRIMERA ESTROFA
Bolivianos el hado propicio,
coronó nuestros votos y anhelo;
es ya libre ya libre este suelo,
ya cesó su servil condición.
Al estruendo marcial que ayer fuera
y al clamor de la guerra horroroso,
Siguen hoy en contraste armonioso
dulces himnos de paz y de unión.
SEGUNDA ESTROFA
Esta tierra inocente y hermosa
que ha debido a Bolívar su nombre,
es la Patria felíz donde el hombre
goza el bien de la dicha y la paz.
Que los hijos del grande Bolívar
han ya mil y mil veces jurado
morir antes que ver humillado
de la Patria el augusto pondón.
CORO
TERCERA ESTROFA
Loor eterno a los bravos guerreros
cuyo heroico valor y firmeza;
conquistaron las glorias que empieza
hoy Bolivia felíz a gozar.

BRAZIL

National Anthem of Brazil
I
Desafia o nosso peito a própria morte!
Ó Pátria amada
Idolatrada
Salve! Salve!
A imagem do Cruzeiro resplandece
Gigante pela própria natureza
És belo, és forte, impávido colosso,
E o teu futuro espelha essa grandeza,
Terra adorada!
Entre outras mil
És tu, Brasil,
Ó Pátria amada
Dos filhos deste solo és mãe gentil,
Pátria amada
Brasil!
II
Deitado eternamente em berço esplêndido,
ao som do mar e à luz do céu profundo,
Fulguras, ó Brasil, florão da América,
Iluminado ao sol do Novo Mundo!
Do que a terra mais garrida
Teus risonhos lindos campos tem mais flores,
"Nossos bosques tem mais vida"
"Nossa vida" no teu seio "mais amores"
Ó Pátria amada
Idolatrada
Salve! Salve!
Brasil, de amor eterno seja símbolo
O lábaro que ostentas estrelado,
E diga o verde‐louro dessa flâmula
‐ paz no futuro e glória no passado ‐
Terra adorada!
Entre outras mil
És tu, Brasil,
Ó Pátria amada
Dos filhos deste solo és mãe gentil
Pátria amada
Brasil!
National Anthem
I
The peaceful banks of the Ipiranga
Heard the resounding cry of an heroic people,
And the dazzling rays of the sun of Liberty
Bathed our country in their brilliant light.
If with strong arm we have succeeded
In winning a pledge of equality,
In thy bosom, O Liberty,
Our hearts will defy death itself!
O adored Fatherland,
Cherished and revered,
All hail! All Hail!
Brazil, a dream sublime, vivid ray of love and hope to earth
descends,
Where in your clear, pure, beauteous skies
The image of the Southern Cross shines forth.
O country vast by nature,
Fair and strong, brave and colossus,
Thy future mirrors this thy greatness.
O land adored
Above all others,
'Tis thee Brazil,
Beloved Fatherland!
Thou art the gentle mother of the children of this soil,
Beloved land,
Brazil!
II
Laid out eternally in the splendor of nature,
In the sound of the sea and the light of heaven,
may thou shine, O Brazil, flower of America,
Illumined by the sun of the New World!
More flowers put forth in thy fair, smiling fields
Than the in the most gorgeously reputed lands;
"More life is to be found in the groves",
"More love in our lives" in thy embrace.
O adored Fatherland,
Cherished and revered,
All Hail!
All Hail!
May the star‐scattered banner flown by thee,
Brazil, become the symbol of eternal love,
And may the green‐gold flag proclaim always
‐ Peace in the future and glory in the past ‐
But if the mighty sword of justice drawn forth,
You will perceive your children, who adore you,
neither fear to fight,
nor flee from death itself.
O land adored
Above all others,
'Tis thee Brazil,
Beloved Fatherland!
Thou art the gentle mother of the children of this soil,
Beloved land,
Brazil!

The History of the National Anthem:
"O Canada" was proclaimed Canada's national anthem on July 1,
1980, 100 years after it was first sung on June 24, 1880. The music
was composed by Calixa Lavallée, a well‐known composer; French
lyrics to accompany the music were written by Sir Adolphe‐Basile
Routhier. The song gained steadily in popularity. Many English
versions have appeared over the years. The version on which the
official English lyrics are based was written in 1908 by Mr. Justice
Robert Stanley Weir. The official English version includes changes
recommended in 1968 by a Special Joint Committee of the Senate
and House of Commons. The French lyrics remain unaltered.

"Oh! Gloria Inmarcesible!"
¡Oh gloria inmarcesible!
Horrores prefiriendo A pérfida salud.
Centauros indomables Descienden a
cuelga del ciprés. Lamenta su esperanza Que cubre losa fría;
Pero glorioso orgullo circunda su alba tez. 9.
11. Del hombre los derechos Nariño

National Anthem of Dominica
Isle of Beauty, Isle of Splendour, Isle to all so sweet and fair, All
must surely gaze in wonder, At thy gifts so rich and rare, Rivers,
valleys, hills and mountains, All these gifts we do extol, Healthy
lands so like all fountains, Giving cheer that warms the soul.
Dominica God hath blest thee, With a clime benign and
bright, Pastures green and flow’rs of Beauty, Filling al with pure
delight, And a people strong and Healthy, Full of Godly reverent
fear, May we ever seek to praise Thee, For these gifts so rich
and rare.
Come ye forward, sons and daughters, Of this Gem beyond
compare, Strive for honour sons and daughters, Do the right be
firm be fair, Toil with the hearts and hands and voices, We must
prosper! Sound the call, In which everyone rejoices, “All for Each
and Each for All”.

History of the National Anthem (Isle of Beauty): As a symbol of
nationhood, the National Anthem takes its place beside the
National Flag. Many Dominicans remember the pre‐eminence
given to “God Save the Queen”, the British National Anthem. All
self‐respecting citizens within hearing stand in silence, with heads
bared, where appropriate, while the National Anthem is being
rendered, on ceremonial and official occasions. Only a degenerate
would dream of showing disrespect to his/her own Flag or
National Anthem since by doing so he/she would be severing the
one link that exists between himself and every national. It is
expected that every citizen will treat our National Anthem with
the same respect and patriotism as is shown to theirs by other
nationals throughout the civilized world.
The Dominica National Anthem, popularly referred to as “The Isle
of Beauty” was retained on achieving Independence; during the
period proceeding Associated Statehood with Britain, it was
referred to as the National Song. The words were composed by
the late Reverend W.O.M Pond and put to music by L.M Christian;
they who were both subsequently honored.
On ceremonial occasions the National Anthem should be
rendered on the arrival of the President as a sign of respect.
It is important to note that the National Anthem should never be
parodied in verse or in song, neither should it be played in any
tempo other than the officially recognized one. Particularly, the
tune should never be played as a dance number, or for the
purpose of advertisement.
In some countries, including the Caribbean, persons who
contravene or fail to comply with regulations in this regard are
guilty of an offence and are liable on summary conviction to a fine
or imprisonment.
There should be no objections to the use of the National Anthem
at the completion of any public function, or when toasts are
proposed at official functions.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Himno Nacional de la República Dominicana
(Emilio Prud‐Homme)
Que es santuario de amor cada pecho De la patria se siente vivir;

“Salve, Oh Patria!”
Words by: Juan León Mera Music by: Antonio Neumane Adopted:
1886
¡Salve oh Patria, mil veces! ¡Oh Patria! ¡gloria a ti! ¡gloria a ti! Y a
millares surgir. Dios migir, a millares surgir. (repetir) CORO

English:
CHORUS
O homeland, we greet you a thousand times!
Glory be to you, O homeland, glory be to you! Your breast
overflows with joy and peace, And we see your radiant face
shining (repeat previous three lines) More brightly than the sun.
(repeat) The worthy sons of the soil Which Pichincha on high is
adorning, Always acclaimed you as sovereign lady And shed their
blood for you. God observed and accepted the sacrifice, And that
blood was the prolific seed Of other heroes whom the world in
astonishment saw
(repeat previous three lines) Arising in thousands around you.

EL SALVADOR

Himno Nacional de El Salvador
CORO

National Anthem of Guyana
Dear Land of Guyana, of rivers and plains Made rich by sunshine,
and lush by the rains, Set gem‐like and fair between mountains
and sea Your children salute you, dear land of the free.
Green Land of Guyana, our heroes of yore Both bondsmen and
free, laid their bones on your shore; This soil so they hallowed,
and from them are we, All sons of one mother, Guyana the free.
Great Land of Guyana, diverse though our strains, We are born of
their sacrifice, heirs of their pains, And ours is the glory their eyes
did not see One land of six peoples, united and free.
Dear Land of Guyana, to you will we give Our homage, our service,
each day that we live; God guard you, great Mother, and make us
to be More worthy our heritage‐ land of the free.

HONDURAS
|
Himno Nacional de Honduras
Coro

Chorus
Your flag is a splendour of sky
Crossed with a band of snow;
And there can be seen, in its sacred depths,
Five pale blue stars.
In your emblem, which a rough sea
With its wild waves protects,
Behind the bare summit of a volcano,
A star brightly shines.
Chorus
1. Like an Indian maiden you have been sleeping,
Lulled by the resonant song of your seas,
When, set in your golden valleys,
The bold navigator found you;
And on seeing, enraptured, your beauty,
And feeling your enchantment,
He dedicated a kiss of love to the blue hem
of your splendid mantle.
Chorus
2. From a country where the sun rises,
Beyond the blue Atlantic,
That man who had dreamt you
In search of you he launched to sea.
When you raised your pale forehead,
In the lively anxiousness of your hope,
Under the gentle dome of your sky
Already floated a strange banner.
Chorus
3. It was useless that your beloved Indian
Rushed into the fight with ire,
Because, covered with his blood, Lempira,
In the deep night he sank;
And of the heroic deed, in memory,
The legend alone has kept
A sepulcher in a forgotten place,
And the severe profile of a mountain peak.
Chorus
4. For three centuries your children heard
The imperious mandate of the master;
For three centuries your useless complaint
In the blue atmosphere was lost
But one glorious day your ear
Perceived, powerful and distant,
That there, far away, over the Atlantic,
Indignantly, a lion roared
Chorus
5. It was France, the free, the heroic,
Which in its dreams of centuries slept,
Awoke irate to life
At the virile protest of Danton:
It was France, who sent to the death
The head of the consecrated King,
And which built up proudly at its side,
The altar of the goddess of Reason.
Chorus
6. You also, oh my country!, arose
From your servile deep sleep;
You also showed the world
The infamous shackle destroyed.
And in your blessed soil, behind the tall
Hair of the wild jungle,
Like a bird of black feathers,
The fleeting colony was lost.
Chorus
7. To guard this sacred emblem
We shall march, oh fatherland, to our death;
Our death will be honoured
If we die thinking of your love.
Having defended your holy flag,
And shrouded in its glorious folds,
Many, Honduras, shall die for you,
But shall fall in honour.
Chorus

(Paraguayans, The Republic or Death!)
deidad; Opresores, doblad rodilla ! Compatriotas el Himno
entonad !
CORO
Libertad y Justicia defiende Nuestra Patria; Tiranos, oid!

For three centuries a reign oppressed The unhappy peoples of
America, But one day, their anger aroused, they said: "An end to
this!" and broke the reign. Our forefathers, fighting
magnificently, Displayed their martial glory, And when the august
diadem was shattered, They raised the triumphal cap of liberty.
CHORUS:
Paraguayans, Republic or death! It was our strength that gave us
our final liberty. Neither tyrants nor slaves can continue, Where
unity and equality reign, Where unity and equality reign.
A new Rome, the Fatherland shall proudly display Two leaders of
name and valor Who, rivals, like Romulus and Remus Divided
government and power. Long years, during which Phoebus in the
clouds Saw darken the pearl of the South, Today a grand hero
appears Raising up again her glory and virtue...
CHORUS
Europe and the world salute her with applause And also
acclaim Invincible bastion of heroism, Magnificent Eden of
riches. (But) when discord rumbled all around Which fatally
devoured other Peoples, Paraguayans, the sacred ground Was
covered by an angel with its wings.
CHORUS
Oh, how pure, of laurel girded Sweet Fatherland, in this manner
you show yourself In your ensign one sees the colors Of sapphire,
diamond, and ruby. In your coat of arms, which the Sun
illuminates, Under the cap, one sees the lion. Double image of the
strong and the free, And of glories, the memory and crest.
CHORUS
From the tomb of vile feudalism The national Deity rises
free; Oppressors, bend your knees! Compatriots, intone the
hymn! Sound the cry, "Republic or death"! Our breasts exhale it
with faith, And the mountains repeat its echoes Like giants arising.
CHORUS
Our Fatherland defends liberty and justice; Tyrants: listen! The
laws in its sacred charter Will sustain its heroism in the
fight. Against the world, if the world opposes it, If the world dares
to insult her security, Battling to avenge we shall know her Or die
embracing her.
CHORUS
Arise, oh People, your splendid sword That strikes with sparkles of
God, There is no middle ground between free or slave And an
abyss divides the two. In the gentle breezes the Hymn
resounds, Repeating with triumphal echo: For the free, renowned
glory! For the Fatherland, immortal laurel!

PERU
|
Himno Nacional de Peru
CORO
Somos libres, seámoslo siempre,
y antes niegue sus luces el sol,
que faltemos al voto solemne
que la patria al Eterno elevó.
ESTROFAS

“The Star Spangled Banner”
Francis Scott Key (1814)
Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly
we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and
bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star‐spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Himno Nacional del Uruguay
Coro
