Title: Building an Effective Citizenry - Lessons learned from Initiatives in Youth Engagement
Author: Sarah S. Pearson and Heather M. Voke
Summary: This publication from the American Youth Policy Forum (AYPF) reports some of the ideas that were introduced and discussed in a series of forums and field trips held by the AYPF in years 2002-2003 on issues related to the development of effective citizenry and youth engagement. The report emphasizes the idea that youth engagement initiatives can make important contributions to their communities and stresses the need of recognition and support from policies and legislation and from leaders in education and youth development. The presentation of several of those forums describes the work that is being made locally and nationally to promote the development of engaged citizens, captures participants’ knowledge and issues some recommendations about characteristics of good practices and programs. The topics of the discussed forums are: civic participation of youth with disabilities, the “scaling up” for the Youth VOICES Project, the first amendment schools, an imaginary new civic institution for the future, the existing contrast in civic and political behavior of youth aged 15-25, models for engaging youth in policy and in educational change, the influence of Youth Court and the Cesar Chavez Public Charter High School for Public Policy. * Copyright - American Youth Policy Forum, Washington, DC, 2003
