Title: Facebook as an Informal Teacher Professional Development Tool
Author: Charmaine S. Bissessar
Summary: This article published in the Australian Journal of Teacher Education demonstrates how social media can be used as an effective and efficient tool to promote teacher professional development. The author concludes that the synchronous nature of using social media platforms allows educators to connect with each other “anytime, anywhere, anyplace and in an instant has changed the orthodox landscape of mainstream teacher professional development”. The author conducted a qualitative study on a Trinidadian Facebook site A Teachers Voice (ATV). Findings indicated that teachers in Trinidad and Tobago found social media to be very important and essential for communication about (a) curriculum, (b) teaching methodologies, (c) instructional technology;, (d) general teacher concerns (e) ethical concerns, and (f) topical issues globally and locally. Authors state the importance of evaluating more social media platforms such as ATV in order to understand the wider impact that these platforms may have.
