OAS Countries Reaffirm Commitment to Sustainable Development

Following a one year process of dialogue and meaningful exchanges among OAS member States, which included consultations with civil society and social actors, the Third Inter-American meeting of Ministers and High Level Authorities on Sustainable Development concluded in Honduras on October 21st. At the meeting, Member States adopted the Declaration of Tela to promote a sustainable development agenda for the Americas, in line with the objectives for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations, and with a full commitment to address climate change. » Read more

     

Over 60 opportunities for collaboration on competitiveness identified in Argentina

Cooperation in social protection: exchanging experiences, expanding opportunities

More than 25 economic development leaders from universities, companies and governments from 16 countries of the Americas gathered in Argentina to explore commercial and collaboration opportunities with strategic partners. The Fourth Americas Competitiveness Exchange on Innovation and Entrepreneurship (ACE) of the Inter-American Competitiveness Network (RIAC) concluded on October 30 in Cordoba, Argentina with concrete results, including the identification of over 60 opportunities for collaboration among participants. » Read more

The OAS and The University of West Indies launch Alliance for Citizenship Education

The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, on his first visit to a Caribbean country since taking office earlier this year, launched the "OAS-UWI Alliance for Citizenship Education" in Jamaica, with the Principal of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Archibald McDonald. The alliance aims to strengthen the capacity of young educators who are part of the UWI Mona group "Governance Society" and enrich the way the issues of governance and citizenship education are included in the academic curriculum. » Read more

Furthering the theme on Sustainable Development after its recent Ministerial Meeting, the OAS co-hosted an international discussion entitled “Our Shared Treasure: Oceans and Climate Change” on October 26 in Washington DC. The 67th OAS Policy Roundtable, sponsored by the Principality of Monaco and National Geographic, gathered expert panelists to discuss challenges and successful practices for ocean conservation. » Read more

 

The OAS Continues to Support Cooperation among Small Hotels

Cooperation in social protection: exchanging experiences, expanding opportunities

Hotel owners and representatives of national associations of small hotels from Central America, South America and the Caribbean convened at the Third Inter-American Gathering of Owners and Operators of Small Hotels on October 28 and 29 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The meeting, co-sponsored by the OAS, facilitated the coordination of efforts and continued strengthening integration and cooperation in this important tourism sector. » Read more

 

 

Cooperation in Action

Bilateral cooperation increases between labor administrations. So far in 2015, there have been six missions of bilateral cooperation on labor issues among 10 countries in the Americas, with 2 more planned for the remainder of the year. Through the OAS Inter-American Network for Labor Administration (RIAL), the Ministries of Labor exchange knowledge, practices and experiences in direct and personalized cooperation missions, which have proven to strengthen their capacity to deliver services to workers and employers. » Read more

New Joint Publication on Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education. The OAS strengthens its alliances to benefit the region’s port sector. Through its Inter-American Committee on Ports (CIP), the OAS continues to channel support from entities in the public and private sectors to the port authorities of the Americas. Recent examples are the 25 scholarships awarded by Puertos del Estado of Spain, one of the main strategic partners of the CIP, to port officials from 14 countries in the region, who from October 13 to November 10, 2015 participated in the XX Ibero-American Course on Port Management in Spain. » Read more
