Haiti, arguably one of the most culturally-rich countries in the region, served as the ideal host of this year’s meeting of
OAS Authorities on Culture. During the opening ceremony, President Michel Martelly highlighted his country’s abundant and
rich historical, religious, artistic, and literary traditions, noting that "this wealth of heritage constitutes a shared asset of the Haitian nation and it enables us to embrace, with strength and intelligence, the diversity of our artistic expressions and movements. This heritage also represents a common foundation for exchanges and a fertile ground for promoting interculturality,
since we are here at a regional cultural event."

Jamaica Shares Successful Social Program with Caribbean Counterparts
Jamaica’s Programme of Advancement through Health and Education (PATH) is an example of inter-sectoral collaboration at work that is allowing the government to implement a sustainable and impactful social protection program. Colombia promotes Environmentally-Friendly Production Processes
with support from the OAS
Today, governments around the world seek to
promote their companies and productivity while responding to the
challenges related to energy and climate change. To address this
challenge, the OAS-SEDI Department of Sustainable Development joined
forces with the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism (MinCIT) of
Colombia, the National Cleaner Production Centre (CNPML) and the
University of San Buenaventura in conducting two training workshops
“Closed Looped Cycle Production and Circular Economy: an Innovative
Vision of Productivity,” held on July 29 in Medellin and on August 1
in Bogota.

OAS offers Ph.D. scholarships valued at over 10 million US dollars
in Belgium
A new door of opportunity has opened for
professionals and academics seeking to complete PhD studies in
Europe. In partnership with the
Vrije Universiteit Brussel
(VUB), in Belgium, the OAS-SEDI has opened a scholarship offering
for citizens of the Americas. Sixty (60) scholarships for PhD
studies will be offered each year for the next five years. These
scholarships are valued at over 10 million US dollars. The OAS has
awarded nearly 260 PhD scholarships since 2007. As the region

Cooperation in Action

RIAL supports bilateral cooperation activities between
Ministries of Labor. High-level delegations from the
Ministries of Labor from 4 countries participated in professional
exchange missions during the last week of August. A delegation from
the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security of Paraguay -
which was created at the beginning of this year – visited its
counterpart in Argentina, which is offering its support in defining
its organization and operations.

OAS
- Guatemala sign agreement to promote the use of Ethanol.
An estimated U$100 million may be saved annually in fossil fuel
imports in Guatemala if ethanol production is advanced in the
country. To this end, the government joined efforts with the
OAS-SEDI Department of Sustainable Development, to will provide
technical assistance in the implementation of a pilot project that
will assess the potential of using a mix of ethanol and gasoline in
vehicles, as well as support the establishment of a new Technical
Unit on Biofuels in the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM).

Recognized Universities from Colombia and Peru join the OAS
Scholarship program - PAEC. The University of the Andes (Uniandes)
and the ICETEX from Colombia and ESAN from Peru joined the growing
group of recognized universities and educational institutions that
are offering scholarships to citizens of the Americas through
Partnerships Program for Education and Training OAS (PAEC) this
month.
