         Summary

The University of Panama Herbarium (PMA), it is the largest herbarium of Panama and it functions as the National Herbarium, Presently, it has a collection of 60.000 vascular plants specimens with I digitalized information. From these 51.000 (85%) have georeferences The information is available at PMA web site http://www.up.ac.pa/herbariopanama/index.html.

From the total available in the web, 9.000 (15%) have no georeference and 7.000 need verification. Besides, there are 52.000 specimens that need to be processed. From these, we expect to digitalize and to georeference 12.000. One of the objectives of our proposal is to give a high value to the information on biodiversity, so it will be widely used in decisions related to conservation of our environment. Georeference of our specimens increment the value of our data and allows to use these in applications to establish and predict real and potential species distribution, its area of occupation, among others. These are valuable for the establishment of protected areas, prediction of environmental impact of processes of development not related to environmental variable.

Georeferencing 9.000 specimens and verifying 7.000 from the processed collection, it is our goal. Also, we planned to georeference and digitalize 12.000 specimens from the not processed collection. Moreover 1.500 type images will be digitalized at high resolution. An upgraded gazetteer will be gathered to support future georeferencing. The job will be done in a year by senior Botany students from the University of Panama. Mireya Correa will coordinate and supervise the project, since she is a taxonomist with wide experience in digitalizing and georeferencing. We are requesting US$ 15.000 from IABIN. The 29.500 new data will agree with IABIN definition and will be generated using standards and philosophy of this net. Information will be free accessible at Species and Specimens Net
