On February 17, 2010, the Department of
International Law (DIL) organized the second
Course on International Refugee Law, which took
place in the framework of the Committee on Juridical
and Political Affairs (CAJP) of the OAS Permanent
Council. The course was held in the Padilha Vidal
Room of the OAS General Secretariat headquarters
building in Washington, D.C. It was presented in
accordance with the mandate in resolution AG/RES.
2511 (XXXIX-O/09).
The purpose of the course was to provide an update
on international refugee law for personnel of the
permanent missions of the OAS member states, OAS
General Secretariat staff, and other interested
parties. More than 100 people participated in the
activity
For this event the DIL arranged for the technical
and financial collaboration of the United Nations
High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), with which
the General Secretariat has a cooperation agreement
specifying that the DIL acts as the point of
contact.
UNHCR specialists and experts on the refugee topic
from Brazil and Ecuador taught the classes.
For several decades the Organization of American
States has been consistently concerned about the
situation of persons needing international
protection who are victims of forced displacement.
