PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN THE REPUBLIC OF EL SALVADOR
(Adopted by the Permanent Council at its regular meeting of April 9,
2014)
THE PERMANENT COUNCIL OF THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES,
TAKING INTO ACCOUNT:
That in the Republic of El Salvador presidential elections were recently
held over two rounds, on February 2 and March 9, 2014, respectively; and
That the Organization of American States (OAS) supported the electoral
process through an electoral observation mission in both rounds; and
CONSIDERING:
That the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of El Salvador, in accordance with
the electoral standards in force, issued the final ballot return and
official statement of the results of the poll on March 16, 2014,
declaring Mr. Salvador Sánchez Cerén President-elect and Mr. Oscar Ortiz
Ascencio Vice President-elect,
DECLARES:
1. To express its solidarity with, and congratulate, the
President-elect, Mr. Salvador Sánchez Cerén, the Vice President-elect,
Mr. Oscar Ortiz Ascencio, and the Salvadorean people on the profound
civic-mindedness they displayed at the ballot boxes during the recent
presidential elections.
2. To acknowledge the work of the Electoral Observation Mission in El
Salvador and the report submitted to the Permanent Council.
3. To recognize the will of all political actors and sectors of
Salvadorean society to maintain dialogue and consensus in a bid to
continue strengthening institutions, the rule of law, and democratic
development.
