EXECUTIVE ORDER No. 98-2
SUBJECT:  REINTEGRATION OF AMERICAS MAGAZINE INTO THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INFORMATION AND AMENDMENT OF EXECUTIVE ORDER 97-5

 

THE SECRETARY GENERAL,

In exercise of the authority conferred upon him under Articles 109 and 113 of the Charter of the Organization of American States ("OAS") and Articles 4, 8, and 12 of the General Standards to Govern the Operation of the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States, and

CONSIDERING,

That the purposes of Americas Magazine are: (a) to transmit information about the peoples and cultures of the Americas, including the traditional values of the American peoples; (b) to spread knowledge about the purposes and achievements of the OAS; and (c) to promote the ideals of inter-American Cooperation;

That in Resolution AG/RES. 1291 (XXIV-O/94), the General Assembly noted Americas Magazine's "important role as a public information tool of the Organization of American States;"

That the activities of Americas Magazine logically fall within the purview of the responsibilities of the Department of Public Information, as set out in Executive Order 97-5, entitled "Reorganization of the Department of Public Information;"

That from November 5, 1 982 through to the publication of Executive Order 97-5 on July 23, 1 997, Americas Magazine was an activity of the Department of Public Information;

That pursuant to Resolutions AG/RES. 1230 (XXIII-O/93) and AG/RES. 1291 (XXIV-O/94), the Permanent Council established the Editorial Board of Americas Magazine to oversee the editorial policy, circulation, promotion, and management of the magazine,

RESOLVES:

1. To amend Section II(B) of Executive Order 97-5 to state:

B. The Department of Public Information shall consist of the following service areas:

1. Office of the Director;
2. Press;
3. Radio and Television; and
4. Americas Magazine.

2. To add to Section III(B) of Executive Order 97-5 a new Subsection 4, which describes the functions and responsibilities of the Americas Magazine service area as follows:

4. Americas Magazine

a. To publish Americas magazine within the guidelines established by the Permanent Council's Editorial Board and in accordance with its sales revenues and other resources provided under the Program-Budget;

b. To report periodically and as otherwise requested to the Permanent Council's Editorial Board of Americas magazine; and

c. To assist the Director of the Department of Public Information in the activities of the Department related to the purposes of Americas magazine.

IV. AMENDMENTS AND REPEALS

This Executive Order specifically amends Sections II(B) and III(B) of Executive Order 97-5, and it supersedes any and all prior dispositions and practices of the General Secretariat to the contrary.

V. EFFECT

This Executive Order shall take effect on the date on which it is signed.
