Washington, D.C. - The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) will hold its 189th Regular Period of Sessions from February 26 to March 7, in which public hearings will be held in person with the possibility of virtual participation from February 26 to March 1 in Washington, D.C.
Since November 13, 2023, requests for public hearings will be received from all Member States of the Organization of American States (OAS) through the electronic system available for this purpose in the four official languages of the OAS: Spanish, English, Portuguese and French. The system will be open until December 3 at 23:59 (EST), Washington, D.C. time.
Petitioners will be informed if their applications have been approved up to one month before the hearings, and the hearing schedule will be published on the IACHR website oas.org/en/IACHR/ up to ten days before the start of the Period of Sessions.
A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for and to defend human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in an individual capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
