Washington, D.C. – The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) announced two ex-officio thematic hearings and a meeting with civil society that are to be held during its 184th Period of Sessions, between June 13 and June 24, 2022. To that effect, the Commission called for the participation of civil society organizations.

Ex-officio hearings

The public ex-officio hearing "Gender stereotypes and access to justice" is set to take place between 9 and 10:30 a.m. (EST) on June 23 and seeks to gather updated technical data from civil society organizations, litigants, and academic experts on the impact of gender stereotypes on due process guarantees.

The hearing "Situation of labor and trade-union rights in Cuba" is set to take place between 2 and 3:30 p.m. (EST) on June 23 and seeks to gather information from civil society organizations, trade unions, and experts concerning human rights violations affecting workers.

Anyone wishing to take part in either of the two public hearings will need to register online by 11:59 p.m. (EST) on May 31. In keeping with Article 66 of the IACHR's Rules of Procedure, anyone interested will need to properly identify themselves and explain why they would like to take part in the hearing.

The Inter-American Commission will announce at a later date the list of organizations summoned to take part in the hearings. The IACHR invites anyone who is not summoned to submit, in writing, any documentation or information they deem relevant to the topic of the hearing.

Meeting with civil society

The IACHR also calls for participants for a meeting with civil society that is set to take place between 4 and 5:30 p.m. (EST) on June 15, to report progress in efforts to draft the Strategic Plan 2022–2026.

Any organizations interested in taking part in this meeting will need to register by filling out this form in Spanish and English by 11:59 pm (EST) on June 8, 2022, answering a few questions on their involvement in the process of drafting the Strategic Plan 2022–2026. The organizations who are chosen to take part in the meeting will receive connection and other relevant details at the email address they provide.

Both the ex-officio public hearings and the meeting with civil society will take place on a secure virtual platform that is to be launched in due course and will have interpretation services both from Spanish into English and from English into Spanish. These meetings will be recorded for various IACHR purposes.

A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has a mandate to promote respect for and to defend human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in this area. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who are elected in an individual capacity by the OAS General Assembly and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
