Because of the way they bring opportunities and risks into focus, cities are natural laboratories of policy innovation to prevent and reduce violence. Some of the most remarkable progress in homicide reduction, crime prevention and public safety in recent decades has occurred in large and medium-sized cities, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Costs of Crime and Violence - New Evidence and Insights in Latin America and the Caribbean
Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) has shown progress in many socioeconomic areas in the last decade. Between 2004 and 2014, most countries in the region experienced annual growth rates close to 4 percent, poverty rates decreased, and LAC citizens became healthier and better educated. In fact, the Millennium Development Goal of halving, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people living on less than US$1.25 a day was attained in LAC in 2008, seven years early.

Los costos del crimen y de la violencia - Nueva evidencia y hallazgos en América Latina y el Caribe
América Latina y el Caribe (ALC) ha mostrado progresos en muchas áreas socioeconómicas en la última década. Entre 2004 y 2014, la mayoría de los países experimentó tasas de crecimiento anual cercanas al 4%, las tasas de pobreza disminuyeron y los ciudadanos de ALC se volvieron más saludables y alcanzaron un mayor nivel de estudios. De hecho, el objetivo de desarrollo del milenio de reducir a la mitad, entre 1990 y 2015, la proporción de personas que viven con menos de US$1,25 al día se alcanzó en 2008, siete años antes.
