The presidential election in Mexico this years represents an opportunity to reflect on the failures that previous policies have had in the fight against crime and violence. In the middle of the most violent year in recent history, Mexicans should consider alternatives to better handle the crisis the country is passing through. This article points to nine (9) strategies that could help the future leader of the country to improve the situation in the short and long term. These strategies focus on the improvement of transparency in government institutions, the consideration of Mexico's inequality as a part of the problem and on the law enforcement agencies' effectiveness on the municipalities.
