UNICEF is working closely with the San Marcos Mayor’s Office in El Salvador in a comprehensive violence prevention strategy that includes child protection & development and educational workshops that teach families about non-violence. The program also provides scholarships for children’s school expenses. Children in the workshop can spend time with other children and boost their self-esteem, while parents can meet other parents.
Children from the San Marcos municipality are invited to participate in weekly sport activities, including free swimming lessons. Over a thousand children have participated in the program. Their municipality is known for gang violence, crime, and high rates of homicide, therefore making it highly insecure for children to play outside. The swimming program provides an opportunity for children to meet other kids, learn swimming skills, and win medals in local and national competitions.
