In light of the need for a continued coordinated institutional response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Americas, the Secretary General of the OAS called the Third Meeting of High Authorities of the JSWG on the Impact of COVID-19 in the Americas to be held on Friday, June 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (EDT).

This meeting will be held as a follow-up to the two previous meetings of High Authorities of the Joint Summit Working Group (JSWG) on the Impact of COVID-19 in the Americas (April 3 and 29, 2020), in which the members of the JSWG agreed to meet periodically to ensure continuous coordination on the matter and update shared information that shows an overview of the Inter-American community actions in support of the countries of the region.

During this meeting, an update on the health situation in the region is expected from Dr. Carissa Etienne, Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Furthermore, and given that in the recent meetings there was consensus that it would be very useful to buttress the discussions with sectoral analyses to obtain a more in-depth understanding of problems and opportunities associated with the actions that will be taken by JSWG institutions, the Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), Mr. Manuel Otero, as well as Mr. Fabrizio Opertti, Manager of the Integration and Trade Sector, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), will present on food security and its commercial and economic impacts on value chains. Subsequently, an open dialogue will follow.

The Joint Summit Working Group (JSWG) is an organ of the Summit of the Americas Process. It is a horizontal technical cooperation mechanism that allows continuous dialogue and close coordination of the Inter-American system to guarantee the effectiveness and efficiency of the implementation and follow-up of the mandates of the Summits of the Americas. The JSWG comprises the Organization of American States (OAS), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the World Bank, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the Latin American Development Bank (CAF), the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABIE), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).  The Summits of the Americas Secretariat (SAS) of the OAS is the Secretariat of the JSWG.   For more information: http://www.summit-americas.org/default_en.htm
