Ministers and High-Level Authorities of Science and Technology from across the Americas gathered at the OAS Headquarters in Washington, D.C. on December 12-13, 2024, to discuss key issues related to the safe, secure, and trustworthy development and deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The meeting focused on building consensus around policies around governance, regulatory, and institutional frameworks for the safe, secure, and trustworthy development and deployment of AI in the region.
Over the course of the two-days, participants engaged in discussions on:
- Designing Model Governance, Regulatory and Institutional Frameworks for AI.
- Promoting Inter-Sectoral Dialogue and collaborative programs.
- Engaging with the private sector on responsible AI development.
- Strengthening Institutional Capacities and Developing AI Skills.
- Accelerating regional cooperation for AI Research and innovation.
Outcomes of the Meeting:
- Adoption of the Declaration and Plan of Action: Towards the Safe, Secure and Trustworthy Development and Deployment of Artificial Intelligence in the Americas: The Importance of Governance, Regulatory, and Institutional Frameworks
- Election of Authorities of the Inter-American Committee on Science and Technology (2024-2027)

- Established two working groups under the COMCYT, as defined in the Declaration.
- Confirmation of host offers for the upcoming the Eighth Meeting of Ministers and High Authorities of Science and Technology.
- Recognition Ceremony honoring distinguished members of the scientific community of the Americas with a Special Science and Technology Award Ceremony
