The meetings provide an opportunity for States to engage in a dialogue on the existing gaps in implementing the Inter-American Convention against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives, and Other Related Materials (CIFTA), and to continue analyzing the links between the illicit manufacturing, trafficking, and commercialization of firearms, ammunition, explosives, and other related materials and the various expressions of national and transnational organized crime; the strengthening of oversight and control mechanisms; as well as the activities of arms manufacturers, exporters, private arms dealers, and their effects on human rights.

Additionally, during the Twenty-Fourth Meeting of the CIFTA Consultative Committee, three new Inter-American guidelines will be submitted for the consideration of the State Parties to integrate the complementary documents of the CIFTA, of voluntary use by the States Parties: (i) Operational Procedures Manual for the Destruction of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW); (ii) Operational Procedures Manual for Physical Security and Stockpile Management; (iii) Inter-American Guidelines for the Prevention of Gender-Based Violence with the Use of Firearms.
