Virtual Course: Promoting Democratic Participation in Educational Settings - Spanish Edition

The Executive Secretariat for Integral Development (SEDI) of the OAS, through its Department of Human Development, Education, and Employment (DDHEE), will be offering training on promoting participation in educational settings.

The objectives of this course are oriented toward highlighting the role of education as the basis for informed and active democratic participation, as well as strengthening the capacity of teachers to promote it in the institutions where they work. This virtual course is developed within the framework of the Program Democratic Principles Strengthened through Education and Policy Dialogue.

  • Participants

The course is aimed at teachers and those responsible for the administration and/or management of secondary schools in the region designated by their Ministries of Education.

Specific Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand schools as spaces of participation, promoting learning that enables students to have a greater impact on decisions in their personal and community lives.
  • Provide tools for teachers to encourage their students to adopt a critical and responsible attitude toward information and freedom of expression.
  • Promote the knowledge and defense of human rights through didactic approaches that bring students closer to meaningful experiences of exercising those rights.
  • Foster commitment to learning, peer collaboration, and socially meaningful projects.
  • Encourage educational practices aimed at the common good, promoting coexistence based on democratic values.
  • Revisit projects that foster citizen participation in their schools or design a proposal to implement one based on the topics and issues analyzed during the course.
