For more than two decades, the member states established that the Organization should serve as a forum for the exchange of experiences, promoting programs that encourage and guarantee greater participation by civil society in public affairs.

The participation and collaboration of civil society has contributed to achieving the hemispheric goals in strengthening the pillars of the Organization. 

Resolution CP/RES.759(1217/99) contains the “Guidelines for the Participation of Civil Society Organizations in OAS Activities”.

Objectives
  • Coordinate, promote, and strengthen the participation of civil society in the various activities of the OAS.
  • Increase the participation of civil society organizations in all pillars of the Organization.
  • Promote continuous dialogue and joint work with organizations and social actors, in order to include more voices from the region.
Activities
  • Dialogue of civil society representatives with representatives of the Member States, the Secretary General and Assistant Secretary General, within the framework of the OAS General Assemblies.
  • Presentations and training to organizations to promote their registration with the OAS.}
  • Presentation of registration applications to the member states for their consideration and approval.
