This program is a collaborative effort of the Culture and Tourism Section and the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (CICTE). It seeks to promote capacity building on Tourism Security for the public and private sectors in tourism destinations of the Hemisphere.

The initiative emphasizes, among others, improving the safety of tourists in OAS member states, which will improve access controls, security awareness, police training, emergency preparedness.

Objectives
  • To enhance the skills of supervisors and other relevant actors overseeing safety and security in the tourism sector.
  • To promote the development of partnerships and strengthen cooperation between the public and private sector in the tourism sector.
Activities
  • Sharing information on policies and activities implemented at the national and the local level in relation to tourism safety and security, including anti-terrorism measures and crime prevention strategies and measures.
  • Exchanging information on the protocols enacted to manage the tourism sector in relation to the COVID-19 Pandemic, or any other disaster or crisis situations affecting the tourism sector.
  • Disseminating relevant tools and other technical documentation on Tourism Safety and Security.
  • Reviewing specific issues and challenges related to tourism safety and security management in peak seasons in specific tourist destinations.

More than 5,000 public and private sector representatives in over 50 destinations were trained in tourism safety and security.
Two Guidelines for COVID-19 Biosafety Protocols developed and published in conjunction with OAS/CICTE, and with IDB and UNWTO.
40+ tourism security training workshops for public and private sector held in member states
Tourism Security Guidelines and Protocols for Chile, Costa Rica, Jamaica and Ecuador establishment supported.
Execution of three Tourism Security Conferences for the Americas supported.
Four webinars on COVID-19 biosafety protocols in OAS Member States held 2020-2021.
