Description: ENGAGEMENT
Students will view a short clip on the united nations convention on the rights of a child. https://youtube/TFMqTDIYI2U
Students will be asked the following questions. A discussion will then ensue.
1. What is the convention of the rights of a child?
2. What are some of the rights identified in the film?
3. Do you think that Jamaican citizens are able to practice their rights?
4. What are some of the ways in which a child’s right can be breached?
Students (selected) will write responses in the board. These will be copied in their notebooks.
EXPLORATION
Students will be given a handout showing the rights of a child. This will be read in the groups.
Students will discuss what they understand about each right using the Fish Bowl Discussion.
Students will also discuss how 3 of the rights could help them to be good citizens.
Students will use Smart devices to research how any individual may qualify to be a Jamaican citizen.
EXPLANATION
Students will discuss what they have learnt about how one may qualify to become a Jamaican citizen.
ELABORATION
Students will role play being citizenship advisors and advise their client, informing him or her on how to gain Jamaican citizenship.

Students will discuss their rights as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the rights of a child. (Handouts)

• Teacher instructs students to read and complete the cloze passage in pairs.
• Whole class discussion of passage follows
• Students are placed in small groups and instructed to identify the pros and cons of using the internet, writing their responses in a pros and cons grid (PCG) template provided by the teacher. Teacher instructs students on how to use the PCG.
• Students work on developing the PCG in small groups.
• After students have developed the grid they are invited to share their views and reasons with the class, and identify the major arguments as compared to the minor arguments.

This strategy works best when students are given various leveled readers to choose from.

1. Introduce levelled readers which are short stories directed specifically to a student’s level of
English. (The example we will use is: ExoticPlaces .
Explain that these types of readers are developed specifically for EFL learners to support reading comprehension and other reading skills. These readers are available for all ages and levels from adult

2 A simulation class for basic learners will now occur.
Break into groups of 4-5 students.
Review the title and the title page of the example book. Brainstorm ideas in groups about.

3.The students look at the pictures of exotic places and try and guess what country,
where each place is and the nationality of the people from that place. They write
their answers on poster paper in groups. The teacher then reads about each exotic
place and the students check their answers. They then correct any information and compare answers with another group. The teacher can observe and help when needed.
Watch short YouTube video about places and people around the world (this is
something you could have them do at home too)

4. Students can use the words and pictures from the previous activity to order the
story as they watch

5. Look through the book and write down 5 words designated to their role.

Description: Revision: students will be asked the following questions; a. Draw a right angled triangle; label the hypotenuse and put in the right angle symbol. b. Give each angle and sides a name (angles A, B, C and sides a, b, c). c. Draw an isosceles triangle with the sides measuring the following lengths; 4cm, 4cm and 8cm. students will draw a perpendicular bisector from the apex of a triangle to the base. Students will correctly place in the two right angles. Step1: Students will draw a right angled triangle and label the sides. They will write on the hypotenuse, adjacent and opposite sides. Students and teacher will discuss what makes a side the opposite. Students will participate in class activity to identify the side based on the angle in question. Step2: 1. Teacher will introduce students to the sine ratio. Students will find the ratio on their calculator. 2. Students will attempt to fine the sine of given angles using their calculators, eg 30º, 45º, 75º, etc. 3. Students will use their calculators to find angles using sine inverse of numbers, eg 0.5, 0.98, 0.45, etc. 4. Teacher will draw a right angle triangle on the board with a specific angle (30 degrees) and the hypotenuse measuring 20cm, student will be asked to locate the opposite side. 5. Teacher will introduce students to the formula for sine. Students will attempt to use the formula to find the length of the opposite side. Teacher will assist the students if they are having difficulty applying the formula. 6. Students and teacher will work a problem together. Students will ask any further questions that they have. 7. A question will be written on the board where the hypotenuse is the unknown. Students will attempt to use the formula to find the length of the hypotenuse. Teacher will assist the students if they are having difficulty applying the formula. 8. Students will be given another question to calculate the unknown angle. Students will attempt to find the size of angle using sine ratio and convert the answer to degrees using sine inverse. Teacher will assist the students if they are having difficulty applying the formula and converting from decimal to degrees (sign inverse) correctly. 9. Students will be presented with a real life question to apply the sine formula to; Question: Eddie needs a new stay wire on his sailboat to replace one that broke in a high wind. The mast on his sailboat is 4.5m tall, and the stay wire must make an angle of 60 degrees with the deck of the boat. What length of wire stay does he need?
