What is energy?
Students’ age range: 14-16

Topic: Setting the stage – what is energy and what are its forms?
 
Description: In the form of a trivia game, use the quiz attached to test and/or strength students’ general knowledge on energy. They will participate in the trivia game to test their knowledge on energy in general. A few minutes will be taken to remind students about their tools to participate in the ACS exercise. Students will be given time to read and have their question and answer prompts ready for an effective interaction. Read your Save and Learn Booklet, p. 20 Familiarize yourself with the questioning and answering prompts to participate in the ACS activity. Students will be asked to form a circle with their chairs, have their question and answer prompts and introduce the first question: Where do we get energy from? How does our school get its energy? Seat in a big circle and prepare prompts to participate in the Academic Conversation. Allow students to continue the conversation by utilizing the prompts. The teacher will interfere as needed to provide direction to the conversation and/or clarify ideas that might not be clear. Continue the conversation using the prompts. Ask for teacher’s help if at some point you need it.
Take notes from discussions and from posters prepared by the teacher.

Description: Students reflect about forms of saving energy. They brainstorm ideas.
The teacher asked students to bring articles about the benefits of using renewable resources. The teacher asks them to read the articles and to read the Learn and Save booklet (pages 36 to 43)

Indicate that it is a comparative chart and ask that they fill it with the alternate name they would use. Fill the comparative table with the necessary knowledge and look for new ways to create energy that does not pollute the environment

Topic: Conservation of Energy
 
Description: The teacher will ask for about for volunteers to take part in a class race. The teacher will instruct students to carry as many beans from one side of the class to the other as quickly as possible. Once completed the teacher will ask students the following questions:
What was needed in order to carry out the activity?
Why is energy important?
Where else is energy exerted?
Distribute construction paper to students in groups of about three (3). Students will be asked to gather ideas of where energy exerted using a mapping technique. Once completed students will be required to give examples of how energy is exerted in each environment, and how best persons can assist in conserving energy in the environment.
Students will join groups of three (3), which they will work together to collaborate ideas on where energy is exerted and also how energy can be conserved by persons in these specific communities. Once completed students will present information.
Share a definition of energy to students. The teacher will highlight responses where energy is found.The guided practice would be an explanation of the ways energy is used in the community and how we can conserve, allowing all students to add inputs to cases viewed during the cooperative discussion lead by the teacher.
Students will be expected to share their ideas of where energy is exerted and also how it can be conserved after viewing various scenarios viewed in class.
The teacher will divide the class into two groups. The teacher will present questions such as:
What is energy
Why is energy important
How can we conserve energy used in various áreas within our island
What is our government doing to promote conservation of energy
