Use of Energy at School
Students’ age range: 16-18
Topic: Saving Energy in Schools and Households
 
Description: Ask students about their knowledge of the availability of energy resources in the region and how long they may last. (Provide the relevant information at this point; reiterate importance at wrap up).
Ask students also about their feelings on energy use in their school, homes, and communities. (Connect relevance of availability of resources with energy use at this point; reiterate importance at wrap up).Students will briefly discuss their knowledge of the availability of energy resources in the region and how long they may last.

Assign reading in the Learn and Save Booklet, pages 34-35 (conserving energy); pages 36 and 37 (ways to conserve energy at school and home)
Explain Socratic Seminar.
Discuss rules of conduct during Socratic Seminar.
Initial/possible discussion questions:
• What do you think about the ways you have read to conserve energy in the school and home?
• Are they sufficient enough to make a significant difference?
• Can energy conservation in the school and home be made more efficient/effective?
The teacher will redirect the discussion where and when necessary.
Students will read the assigned pages in the Learn and Save Booklet.
• Conduct an energy audit at your school (Learn & Save, p. 43) for one week before this lesson. Use the last day of the audit to include and explain this process to the students.
Assign activities:
• Draft a paragraph of your opinion on the most efficient way to conserve energy in the school and explain why.
• In groups of 5, design an energy management action plan (EMAP). Students will complete the assigned activities:

Participate in the formation of rules and behavioral conduct for the Socratic Seminar.

The lesson was well planned. The objectives and the strategies used were aligned. The objectives were also written to cover the three domains: cognitive, affective and the psychomotive. The evaluation was quite fitting, in that, students who would normally shy away from speaking in class go an opportunity to participate and they were observed. and students were tested on their retention of the content taught. Conclusively, the lesson was cohesive and all the various parts were aligned

I like the idea of conducting an energy audit. This will help the topic to come alive for students as they identify with what is happening at home as well. Students will also plan and design ways to conserve on energy in their homes and even at school. I am not seeing a set of learning objectives outlined, however from reading I gather students should be able to identify energy conservation measures and create an action plan for EMAP, which are in line with the assessment given. The use of the socratic strategy seems appropriate for this topic. I would ask students to not only design the EMAP, but give it a test run for a week at home.

Excellent! Students need to be involved in ways in which to conserve energy at school and by extension at home as well.

This is a well-written lesson plan. By using the Socratic Method of questioning, students will be able to discover different ways in which energy can be conserved at school and at home. The questions asked will cause the students to use their critical thinking skills and also use their pre-existing knowledge of ways they conserve energy since they do it daily.

The assignment will give them the opportunity to use or learn research skills that are necessary to carry out investigations.By carrying out an energy audit the students will be involved in their own learning, which will give them a greater understanding about conserving energy at school and home.

The students will then be able apply these energy conservation methods in their own households, hence assisting their parents in lowering their energy bills.

This lesson is very interesting and relevant and not only deals with critical thinking but also creative thinking because the students also had to assess energy management at their homes and design an energy management action plan (EMAP). This includes many subject areas including Science, English Language, Mathematics, Business and is a great inquiry based lesson. It also takes in strategies learnt and brings the classroom to the community.
