The Meeting of Ministers and High-Level Authorities of Science and Technology is the highest hemispheric forum for the design and execution of public policies and the establishment of alliances for development in the areas of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The Ministerial is held every 3 years to report progress in the implementation of its mandates and establish priorities and/or new course of action based on the decisions and mandates established by the OAS General Assembly and the Summit of the Americas.

The Technical Secretariat for the Meetings of Ministers and High Authorities on Science and Technology is the Department of Economic Development of the SEDI.

The following REMCYT (Meeting of Ministers and High Authorities of Science and Technology) meetings have been hosted:

  • VI Meeting – December 7-8, 2021, Jamaica (Virtual)
  • V Meeting – November 2-3, 2017, Medellín, Colombia
  • IV Meeting – March 10-11, 2015, Guatemala City, Guatemala
  • III Meeting – November 2011, Panama City, Panama
  • II Meeting – October 2008, Mexico City, Mexico
  • I Meeting – November 2004, Lima, Peru

The Technical Secretariat for these meetings the Department of Economic Development of the SEDI.

Objectives

• Adopt the Ministerial Declaration and/or Plan of Action, which help chart a clear path forward on priorities and actions to undertake to accelerate the scientific and technological development of the Americas over the next 3-year cycle.

• Provide a space for Member States to identify and exchange good practices, challenges, needs and offers of collaboration in science and technology.

• Lead inter-sectoral dialogues and multi-stakeholders’ regional actionable initiatives to approach science and technology in a manner that promotes innovation, while safeguarding human rights and improving the lives and livelihoods of citizens of the Americas.

• Expand and consolidate strategic alliances and initiatives among governments, academia, private sector and NGOs to promote regional cooperation and integration on Governance, Skills Development and Research and Development in Science and Technology in the region.

• Deepen regional collaboration and cooperation to ensure connectivity for ALL and help close the technological and social gaps through improved opportunities, with particular attention to the inclusion of youth, women and girls and other populations in vulnerable situations.

• Prospecta Americas and the Network of Centers of Excellence on Transformative Technologies;

• High-Level Dialogues on Artificial Intelligence and other transformative technologies.

• Trainings, Workshops and Webinars on engineering education and leveraging science and technology for advancing social and economic development.

• Initiatives to promote gender equity and equality, diversity and inclusion in STEM.

• Exchange of good practices and cooperation on national quality infrastructure.
