The Inter-American Teacher Education Network (ITEN) is an initiative that works with Ministries of Education or other governmental teacher education institutions of OAS Member States and classroom teachers to advance the teaching profession in the Western hemisphere. During its fourth phase, ITEN focused on promoting collaborative work to solve regional policy and practice issues related to pre-K-12 teacher education in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). This focus on STEM education helps support teachers in key areas, close the gender gap for girls and women, and address the technology needs of growing economies.

Objectives

The goal of ITEN is to contribute to the improvement of quality and equitable education in the Americas by promoting knowledge exchange, capacity building, and technical assistance.

Activities
  • Teacher Fellowship - The Teacher Fellowship is composed of 35 outstanding teachers that were nominated by Ministries of Education from OAS Member States to participate in a 3-year capacity building program provided by ITEN and strategic partners. The program took place between 2019 and 2021 during which period teachers received in-person and virtual training on STEM education and leadership skills.
  • Teacher Leadership Funds - Teacher Leadership Funds are financial awards of up to USD $1,000 to educators (preK-university) to support the execution of personal leadership projects that improve STEM teacher education. Teacher Leadership Funds were awarded in 2020 and 2021.
  • Project Teams - ITEN Project Teams are collaborative groups formed by two or more educational institutions that are committed to identifying, testing, or implementing a new or modified solution to a shared problem of policy or practice in STEM teacher education.
  • Seed Grants - The ITEN Seed Grants are funds designated for the implementation, testing, and/or evaluation of evidence-based models of professional development for STEM teachers or other products or programs that support the STEM teaching profession.
  • Cooperation Exchanges - The ITEN Cooperation Exchanges are international gatherings or field visits between two or more ITEN partner institutions. They aim to promote knowledge growth and capacity building for policymakers and educational stakeholders on programs and policies related to the STEM teaching profession and STEM teacher professional development.
  • Annual Seminar - Virtual conference for educational leaders, teachers, teacher educators, and other stakeholders from the Americas to network and exchange knowledge about STEM teacher education.
