GEF CReW+ is a collaborative project approved by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), it is co-implemented by the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The GS/OAS, through the Department of Sustainable Development (DDS), executes activities of component 3 and 4 of the project, focused on providing innovative small-scale solutions for the integrated management of water resources and wastewater at the local, peri-urban and community levels and the promotion and management of knowledge on the importance of integrated management of water resources and wastewater to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

Objectives

The Project aims to implement innovative, small-scale water and wastewater management solutions in the Wider Caribbean Region using an integrated approach and sustainable financing.

The specific objectives are: (i) to improve institutional performance through better policies, regulations and capacity building; (ii) to develop financial mechanisms to achieve long-term sustainability; (iii) to implement small-scale innovative solutions for water and wastewater management in rural and peri-urban areas; and (iv) to disseminate knowledge and lessons learned in the WCR. 

Activities

The program focuses on two components: 

Component 3: Provision of innovative small-scale, local, rural, peri-urban and community-based solutions for IWWM.

Development of a national communications strategy and implementation plan for Barbados (completed).

Implementation of national activities in Colombia: optimization of the water treatment plant in the community of San Antero, Córdoba, through the installation of a tributary reuse system, which includes: i) diagnosis, baseline and development of preliminary project and design studies; ii) implementation of identified improvements; and iii) monitoring of treatment results.

Implementation of national activities in México: guarantee environmental, economic and financial sustainability in the long term through the installation and construction of new eco-techniques for water collection, storage, use and treatment, with detailed design of the technologies.

Implementation of national activities in Trinidad and Tobago: pilot project with the objective of evaluating the use of treated wastewater for agricultural purposes.

Component 4 – Knowledge Management and Advocacy on the importance of IWWM to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Strengthening the regional coordination unit in charge of the promotion and management of knowledge.

Promotion of knowledge and alliances.
