Secretariat for Political Affairs
Strengthening Democracy in the Hemisphere
About the project
Why is a Political Reform Project important?
On behalf of the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (GS/OAS), the Secretariat for Political Affairs (SPA) strives to contribute to the strengthening of the political process in Member States, in particular to the upholding of democracy as the best option to grant peace, security and development.
Through the project “Contributing to Effective Political Reforms in Latin America”, the SPA seeks to increase awareness of the processes and history of political reforms in Latin America since 1978 and to facilitate the dissemination as well as the interchange of experiences and understandings between member States and other relevant actors.
The OAS, as the hemispheric political forum par excellence, has an advantageous position to compile, structure and comparatively analyze the wealth of information and experiences from member States in this area since the time of the transition to democracy.
