47th COURSE ON INTERNATIONAL LAW

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE CONTENT OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT BEFORE SUBMITTING ANY QUESTIONS TO THE COURSE COORDINATOR.

ORGANIZERS: Inter-American Juridical Committee (CJI) and the Department of International Law of the Secretariat of Legal Affairs (SAJ) of the Organization of American States.

DATES: August 1 to 12, 2022.

PLACE:Faculdade Nacional de Direito (UFRJ), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

SCHEDULE: Monday- Friday 9:00am to 5:30 pm.

LANGUAGES OF INSTRUCTION: Spanish and English (no interpretation services will be offered).

CANDIDATE PROFILE: The Course on International Law is aimed at professionals who hold a university degree in law or international relations, have at least two years’ relevant professional experience, and wish to participate in a demanding and rigorous academic experience, in a multicultural environment.

FAIRNESS IN SELECTION PROCESS: In order to ensure the quality of the educational experience, capacity is limited to 45 students. Applications that meet all the requirements will be considered in equal conditions without distinction or discrimination on grounds of race, gender identity or expression, national origin, socioeconomic level, sexual orientation, religion, physical characteristics, disability, nor for any other reason. Incomplete or untimely applications will be rejected immediately.

HOW TO APPLY: Candidates should send the following by email to [email protected] no later than Friday, June 17, 2022, at 5:00 pm U.S. Eastern Standard Time:

a) Letter addressed to the Department of International Law, requesting to be considered and stating that applicant (i) has or will have a valid health insurance policy at the time of attending the Course, that (ii) applicant is able to cover the expenses associated with his/her participation in this activity (airfare, lodging, local transportation, meals, etc.) and (iii) has enough command of the languages of instruction to follow the lecturers and participate in discussions.
b) Curriculum Vitae (résumé) stating profesional and academic experience.
c) Academic degree.
d) Letter or recommendation issued by a professor of law or international affairs attesting to the applicant’s skills; OR letter of recommendation issued by a supervisor (preferably current) attesting to the professional qualifications and qualities of the applicant.
e) Letter of introduction from the institution for which applicant currently works or is associated with.

Applications may be submitted in any of the 4 official languages of the OAS.

COSTS: Enrollment in the Course on International Law and study materials are free of charge. However, each student will be responsible for covering all lodging, transportation, food, health insurance and other related expenses. The OAS will not offer any kind of financial aid.

RESULTS: The results of the selection process will be announced by e-mail directly to each applicant on Thursday, June 30th, 2022.

WAITLIST: Candidates who are not selected may request their inclusion in the waitlist, which will include all requests in the order in which they are received. In the event that a vacancy occurs, that spot will be offered to candidates on the waitlist, in the order in which they appear.

CERTIFICATES: A certificate of attendance will be awarded to those students who attend at least 90% of the classes and pass the exams that will be conducted at the end of each week.

Students who wish to obtain a pass certificate, may submit, before the end of the Course, a hypothesis and proposed outline to develop a legal research and analysis paper on one of the topics addressed during the lectures. The completed paper shall be due within five months following the conclusion of the Course, per the guidelines provided by the coordinator in a timely manner.
