Ministers and Authorities Stress Benefits of Community-Based Rural Tourism

Peru, a country known for its rich cultural heritage and offer of authentic tourism experiences, was the ideal backdrop for this month’s high-level meeting of Tourism Ministers and Authorities, focused on the theme “Community-based Rural Tourism: Agenda for more competitive and sustainable development”. The XXIII Inter-American Congress of Ministers and High-Level Authorities of Tourism, concluded in Lima with authorities’ recognition of this emerging approach to tourism as a mechanism to combat extreme poverty and promote economic growth with social inclusion in the Americas. » Read more

New OAS-OECD Report: International Migration in the Americas

Migration has become one of the central themes in the hemispheric political agenda, given its complexity and international nature. To identify the main trends of migration flows in the Americas, the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) published the report “International Migration in the Americas” (SICREMI 2015), which seeks to contribute to the formulation of public policies based on evidence, leading to the improved management of migration in the region. » Read more

OAS and Virtual Educa Take Education to Children in the Colombia-Venezuela Border

The first Popup School of the OAS and its education program Virtual Educa was built in 24 hours to assist displaced children affected by the situation on the Colombia-Venezuela border. The school, known as Popup given its rapid construction and the simplicity of its materials, is located in Colombia's Norte de Santander department, near the Juan Frio Agricultural Institute. Equipped with 25 laptops and a virtual screen, the school will initially serve more than 60 Colombian and Venezuelan children, and is becoming a center of educational and training resources for the entire community in the municipality of Villa del Rosario, in the department of Norte de Santander, Colombia. » Read more

 

Enabling Entrepreneurship and Innovation Initiatives in Central America and the Caribbean

Cooperation in social protection: exchanging experiences, expanding opportunities

In September, El Salvador and Belize launched important initiatives to support entrepreneurship and innovation for inclusive development. In many ways, the progress made in both countries builds on good practices and experiences from the Americas, shared by key institutions and partners through the OAS. On September 1st, the Technological Agro-industry Park (PTA) of El Salvador received the Social Innovation Award INNOVAGRO 2015 in Chile, recognizing a technology to produce a drink supplement to improve the nutrition of school children. On September 17, the Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE) announced the start of the construction of the new Belize Enterprise and Innovation Institute (BEI2) in partnership with the University of Belize.

Education Authorities launch Cooperation Platform. The 34 Ministries of Education of OAS Member States now have a mechanism for ongoing cooperation and learning. The new "Virtual Platform for Education Cooperation in the Americas" responds to the interest expressed by the education authorities in their most recent Ministerial Meeting. » Read more
