Workers' representatives dialogue with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs in the framework of the XXXVIII OAS General Assembly

In an historic event, workers' representatives engaged in dialogue with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs in the framework of the XXXVIII OAS General Assembly. During this space, representatives of COSATE and TUCA presented the “Declaration on Youth,” in which they commented on the Declaration of Medellin on Youth and Democratic Values.

The central theme of the dialogue was youth employment, stressing the high levels of youth unemployment and inactivity and reiterating the need to accomplish more results in labor insertion through training and active employment policies. Workers and member states reiterated their commitment to youth employment.

In addition, the Heads of the Delegations thanked the workers for their contributions, emphasized that this space for exchange of experiences is essential for the OAS and reiterated their commitment to continue promoting these spaces of dialogue.

During the preparation of this dialogue, COSATE authorities joined efforts with the recently created Trade Union Confederation of the Americas (TUCA), composed of more than 50 million workers of the region. To this end, they counted on the support of the Department of Social Development and Employment (SEDI) of the OAS and the International Labor Organization (ILO), held a planning meeting in Washington , DC on April 28, 2008 and a coordination meeting in Medellin on May 31, 2008.
