Dialogue of heads of delegation with representatives of the workers in the OAS member states - 39 Regular Session of the OAS General Assembly

San Pedro Sula, Honduras -  June 1, 2009

Dialogue of heads of delegation with representatives of the workers in the OAS member states - 39 Regular Session of the OAS General Assembly

Ambassador Albert Ramdin, Assistant Secretary General of the OAS and the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Honduras, Patricia Licona, welcomed the workers to the dialogue of Heads of Delegation with workers’ representatives, and thanked them for their commitment towards it this space that becomes stronger every year within the framework of the OAS General Assembly.

Robert Guiseppi, president of the Trade Union Technical Advisory Council (COSATE), Daniel Durón, Secretary General of the General Workers Center of Honduras (CGTH) and representative of the Trade Union Confederation of the Americas (TUCA-CSA), and Idalmi Cárcamo, representative of the Confederation of Workers of Honduras (CGTH) and CSA, recalled some messages of the dialogue held during the Fifth Summit of the Americas. They also presented the Workers Declaration adopted by TUCA-CSA, organization that congregates 50 million workers.

Under the theme of ‘Non Violence’, the workers highlighted that “peace is both an asset and a permanent undertaking” and at the same time “the fruit of social justice and solidarity”. In addition, they underlined their concern regarding the recent wide-spread violence against trade union leaders in the countries of the Americas. These issues, together with the continuing weapons buildup, the need of agreements towards achieving common good, and the recognition of the active role of the state as a guarantor of human and labor rights, were included in the Workers Declaration.

Afterwards, the Head of delegations thanked the workers for their participation and applauded their declaration. The delegations also presented some of the advances in their countries regarding tripartite dialogue and protection of freedom of association, re-affirmed their commitment to work towards a non-violent culture in a national and hemispheric level, and expressed their support to the words of the workers in affirming that the construction of peace is a shared task by all: Government, private sector and workers.
