XLV General Assembly of the OAS

Dialogue of the Heads of Delegation, the Secretary General, the Assistant Secretary General with the Representatives of the workers, private sector, civil society and other social actors in the framework of the XLIII General Assembly of the OAS

This dialogue is one of the activities that will take place within the framework of the 45th General Assembly of the OAS. It's main objective was to provide the representatives of the different groups with an opportunity to present their recommendations to the Heads of Delegation, Secretary General and Assistant Secretary General of the OAS on the theme of the General Assembly " Present and future of the Organization of American States".

After welcoming addresses by the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, and the Chair of the General Assembly, H.E. Neil Parsan from Trinidad & Tobago, two rounds of interventions from representatives of youth, civil society , workers, and private sector were carried out. Following each round, the Heads of Delegation shared their remarks on the themes discussed.

The speakers on the workers' side were Amanda Villatoro, Secretary for Trade Union Policy and Education of the Trade Union Confederation of the Americas (TUCA) and Brian Finnegan from AFL/CIO on behalf of the Vice-Chairmanship of the Trade Union Advisory Council (COSATE). During their interventions, both delegates shared the main points of the Workers Declaration to the 45 General Assembly of the OAS.

John Craig
from the Canadian Employer's Council represented the Business Technical Advisory Committee on Labor Matters (CEATAL). During his intervention, Mr. Craig highlighted the need for international cooperation and mentioned the experience of the Inter-American Network for Labor Administration (RIAL) as a good example of it. He also noted the importance of supporting OAS Department of Social Inclusion in the actual search for equality and inclusion.

Dialogue of the Secretary General and the Assistant Secretary General with the representatives of Civil Society and other social actors

On the morning of Sunday, June 14, 2015, a conversation took place between the Secretary General and the Assistant Secretary General with civil society representatives and other social actors.

This meeting provided an opportunity for civil society, social actors and workers representatives, among others, to dialogue with the OAS Secretary General and OAS Assistant Secretary General and offer their points of view on the theme of the XLV General Assembly “Present and Future of the Organization of America States,” as well as other topics of the Inter-American agenda.

Mario Raia
, Secretary of International Relations from CONTRAF-CUT Brasil and in representation of the workers delegation, noted the importance of taking into account topics such as violence against women and workers rights in the new vision of the Organization.


Coordination Meeting with the representatives of civil society, workers organizations, the private sector, youth and other social actors

The objective of the Coordination Meeting was to provide a space to civil society and workers representatives as well as other social actors, to discuss and formulate recommendations on the four pillars of the OAS (Promoting Democracy, Defending Human Rights, Ensuring a Multidimensional Approach to Security and Fostering Integral Development and Prosperity) and the relations between the OAS and social actors within each of these pillars.
