The Region faces new demographic and epidemiological challenges. According to current data provided by ECLAC and the United Nations Population Fund, in 2025 there will be over 15 million people with 80 years old or older, and 116 thousand will have reached 100 years old. Researches show that 81% of people born in the region will live 60 years and 42% will exceed 80 years of age. It is estimated that 60% of the population of older persons in Latin America and the Caribbean are women, a figure that is projected to increase to 75% by 2025. It is imperative for the countries to discuss, negotiate and adopt specific measures to guarantee the life and well-being of those citizens, through international and regional standards.
