To carry on with the commitments defined by the Convention, article VI provides for the establishment of a Committee for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities, which is composed of one representative and two alternates appointed by each State Party.
The
Committee, commonly
known as CEDDIS, is the legitimate forum to review the progress of the
Convention’s implementation and to exchange experiences among States
Parties. Therefore, the Committee has among other duties the ability to
adopt reporting guidelines on measures taken by States Parties in
the implementation of the Convention.
The States are required to file such reports, which the CEDDIS will then examine to asses the progress made on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against persons with disabilities, as well as circumstances or difficulties the countries have encountered in implementing the Convention. Moreover the CEDDIS is responsible for drawing conclusions, general observations and suggestions for the gradual fulfillment of the Convention.
Also, the CEDDIS must promote and facilitate cooperation among States Parties and civil society organizations, particularly those constituted by people with disabilities or their families, as well as with international organizations and agencies.
