SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR FOR FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION ANNOUNCES
HE WILL NOT SEEK ANOTHER TERM

Washington, D.C., March 10, 2008 - As he approached the end of his two-year term, which began in April 2006, the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the of the OASInter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), Ignacio J. Álvarez, announced his decision not to seek reelection to the post.

The Special Rapporteur said his decision, which has been communicated to the IACHR, was motivated by professional reasons related to other duties he will assume. The Special Rapporteur reiterated his gratitude to the IACHR for the trust they bestowed on him to carry out such high-level and delicate responsibilities.
