OAS and Mexico Conclude Training Course for Police Officials of the Americas

  October 21, 2011

The Inter-American Police Training Program (PICAP) of the Organization of American States (OAS) concluded today in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, after five days of training for more than 50 police officials from 25 different countries of the region on Criminal Information Systems.

"The Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, signed a Co-operation Framework Agreement in June with the Presidency of AMERIPOL, something we consider to be an invaluable tool", said the OAS Secretary for Multidimensional Security, Adam Blackwell, during the course's inauguration. "It is in this context that we conduct the PICAP training course, supported on this occasion by Mexico’s Federal Police for their experience in the fight against organized crime,” he added.

The course’s objective was to impart the knowledge that Mexico’s Secretariat for Public Security has on collection, systematization and analysis of information, as well as decision-making capabilities based on this information.

The General Commissioner of Mexico’s Federal Police, Facundo Rosas Rosas, said it was “a great honor to have shared our experience with colleagues of the region, as well as to learn from other police bodies on issues that are fundamental to public security.”

The OAS will continue to promote regional initiatives rooted in horizontal co-operation, directed towards strengthening the capacities of the institutions responsible for public security in the Americas through assistance programs.

This event was held just a few weeks before the III Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Public Security in the Americas (MISPA) , which is to take place in Trinidad and Tobago November 17 and 18, with a central theme focused on police management, something considered of fundamental importance to improve security for citizens of the Americas.
