OAS Secretary General welcomes submission by President Obama of FTAs with Panama and Colombia

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, welcomed the decision of the President of the United States, Barack Obama, to submit to the U.S. Congress for ratification the trade agreements with Colombia and Panama.

“The announcement by President Obama is very good news for everyone and a great step so that these two instruments may enter into force as soon as possible and benefit millions of citizens of this continent,” said the head of the OAS, who mentioned the ongoing support shown by the Organization for these treaties.

Secretary General Insulza also stated that the benefits of these agreements are “not only related to the economy, but also have a positive influence in political and even social and cultural relations among countries,” and encouraged Senate and House leaders to “promote as soon as possible, passage of both agreements”, which were signed by the Governments of the respective countries approximately five years ago.
