The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, has announced that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua, Samuel Santos, has ratified, through an official letter, the invitation made last week by the President of the Republic, Daniel Ortega Saavedra, for the deployment of a mission to accompany the General Elections to be held November 6th.
The Secretary General has expressed his readiness for the OAS to send such a mission, in accordance with what is established in the Inter-American Democratic Charter on matters of electoral observation.
To this effect, officials from the General Secretariat will travel to Nicaragua next week to meet with the Chairman of the Supreme Electoral Council and other Government authorities. The objective of these meetings will be to review the procedural aspects for sending the mission, and those will be reflected in the agreements to be signed in the near future by the OAS and the Government of Nicaragua.
Insulza indicated he will travel to Nicaragua in the upcoming weeks to meet with President Ortega and sign the above-mentioned agreements with the pertinent authorities.
