  May 24, 2011

The Member States of the Organization of American States (OAS) will make a decision on the return of Honduras to the Organization during a Special General Assembly on June 1st at Organization headquarters in Washington, DC, according to a decision today by the Permanent Council.

The decision was made with 31 votes in favor, one against (Ecuador), and one absence (Saint Lucia).

The resolution approved by the special session of the Permanent Council resolves to “convene a special session of the OAS General Assembly, to be held at headquarters of the Organization on Wednesday, June 1st, 2011, at 11 a.m. to take such decisions as it deems appropriate regarding the lifting of the suspension of the right of Honduras to participate in the OAS, in accordance with the Charter of the Organization of American States and the Inter-American Democratic Charter.”

The participation of the Republic of Honduras in the activities of the OAS was suspended during a Special General Assembly on July 4th, 2009, following the coup d’état of June 28 of the same year in that country.
