The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) approved today the incorporations of eleven new civil society organizations from six Members States of the OAS to be included in the register and to participate in the activities of the hemispheric Organization.
The new organizations are: the Council for Education, Science and Culture for Peace (FOPAZ) and the Environmental and Natural Resources Foundation (FARN), from Argentina; The National Press Association (ANP), from Bolivia; Pro-Access Foundation and IDEAS Foundation, from Chile; AKUAIPA WAIMAKAT (Association for the Dissemination, Promotion, and Defense of Human and Indigenous Rights) and the Foundation for Freedom of the Press (FLIP), from Colombia; World Conference of Religions for Peace and the Life Project, Inc, from the United States; Aireana, Lesiban Rights Group, from Paraguay; and the Recycling and Clean Production Association – Education and Technology Network, from Venezuela.
With the today’s approval, the Organization of American States has 353 registered civil society organizations.
In 1999, the OAS defined civil society organizations as “national or international institutions, organizations, or bodies integrated by natural and legal persons not related to the government. The support from the civil society contributes to the design of political agreements necessary for the communities in the Member States. These organizations have the ability to develop and strengthen the feedback of information and knowledge with the public sector on a regional and international level and to promote and implement a culture of participatory democracy.
