OAS Secretary General Received Contribution from China for Remodeling of the Headquarters of the Organization
December 20, 2013
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today received a significant contribution from the People’s Republic of China for the remodeling of the headquarters of the Organization in Washington, DC.
"We warmly welcome this important contribution from the People’s Republic of China on an issue as important to us as is the remodeling our headquarters," Insulza said, adding that "this contribution joins others already made by China in various key areas of our Organization such as trade and competitiveness, natural disasters and environmental protection, migration, education and early childhood, for which we thank them also."
The donation was made during a luncheon offered by the White House Ambassador and Permanent Observer of the People's Republic of China to the hemispheric institution, Cui Tiankai, for the OAS Secretary General in the country’s embassy in Washington.
Secretary General Insulza expressed his gratitude for the contribution that China has made to the OAS in recent years, both financially and in other areas. Since 2009, the Beijing government has also made contributions to allow students in the region access to scholarships for education in the country through the OAS, through which students from 29 member countries have done Masters and doctoral studies.
The OAS Secretary General and the Permanent Observer of China also discussed the main issues on the regional agenda, and issues of mutual interest between the Western Hemisphere and Asia. In this context, Secretary General Insulza said that 2014 will mark a decade since the People's Republic of China first participated in the OAS as a Permanent Observer, an anniversary that the head of the multilateral institution and Ambassador Cui agreed should serve to further strengthen relations between the two bodies.
Secretary General Insulza attended the Chinese embassy accompanied by the OAS Secretary for External Relations, Alfonso Quiñonez.
